7. Take your 4 1/4″ square of color #3 and cut it in half on the diagonal, then cut the resulting triangles in half again so that you have four triangles. Do the same with a 4 1/4″ square of your background fabric. Use the resulting triangles to make four units that look like this:
8. Take two 4″ squares of fabric #2 and cut them in half once diagonally. Sew one of the resulting triangles to the above unit so that it looks like this:
Repeat that step until you have four of these blocks. We’ll call this block HQST #3.
9. Take your 4 1/4″ square of color #1 and cut it in half on the diagonal, then cut the resulting triangles in half again so that you have four triangles. Do the same with a 4 1/4″ square of your background fabric. Use the resulting triangles to make four units that look like this:
10. Take two 4″ squares of fabric #2 and cut them in half diagonally. Sew one of the resulting triangles to the above unit so that it looks like this:
Repeat until you have four blocks. We’ll call this block HQST #4.
