My Schtuff, quilt

Simple quilted project made out of squares -- yellow, orange, teal, green and gold

I started this project ages ago thinking that it would be a nice, quick, weekend project. And part of it was. I got the top done in no time, and then it sat and sat and sat waiting for me to get around to quilting and binding it.

Last month my husband and I started declaring some evenings ‘screen-free’ which means no phones, no television and no computers. We’ve been listening to audiobooks and enjoying some of our more crafty hobbies. For him right now that means cross stich and embroidery, for me it means quilting.

It’s been lovely, and one of the side effects of having this sort of dedicated quilting time is that I’m finishing some projects instead of simply acquiring more and more quilt tops LOL

This is one of those finish projects.

To be honest, I’m not quite sure what it is. It’s about 30″ x 30″, so it’s too small to be a lap quilt (at least for me — though it would do a good job of keeping my feet warm?), too big to be a table runner and too small to be a table cover.

I have a friend who has a small child that likes to play with dolls, perhaps she’d like a blanket for her doll? It’s worth asking LOL

I made this using a selection of Northcott Fabrics – Stonehenge Gradations but I’m afraid I have no idea whose pattern this is. If I happen to run into it while looking through my quilting stuff I will come update this post though.

My Schtuff, quilt, scrappy

I had a whack of scraps I wanted to use up, so I cut them into squares and sewed those into nine patches. Then I took the nine patches, cut them up and sewed them back together. And then I took those sliced up nine patches, paired them with this solid fabric, cut them up and pieced them back together…

Then I stuck them in rows and added borders between the rows.

Just sort of winging my way through the process of making this was an interesting exercise in mental flexibility. I don’t love the resulting quilt (I don’t hate it either) but I’ve got a friend who likes it a lot so I’ll be sending it to her. So, yay for it having a home!

As for the picture… I tried to get one without a cat on it, but it was a wee bit challenging:

My Schtuff, quilt

I finished this quilt top recently. It’s the first project I have started and completed during the pandemic. Jo and I masked up and went to the local quilting store a few months ago, back when the numbers in our area weren’t terrifying, and he was like, “Pick out whatever you want, my treat.”

I wanted to do something soft and low-contrast. Subtle. Gentle.

I second guessed my fabric choices along the way a fair bit — I wasn’t sure my ‘dark’ fabric was actually dark enough, but I’m actually really pleased with the end result.

Once it is safe to do so I will hire a longarm quilter to quilt this for me, and I’ll probably bind it in the same fabric I used to do the super simple border there — just to keep it clean.

It’s not quite big enough to cover my big-ass bed, but even so, I think we’ll keep this one rather than gift it to someone LoL

This is my first mystery and was created for the Mailblocks quilting group. I wanted it to be something even the most inexpirienced quilter could do with confidence — as such, it’s extremely simple but really quite charming just the same.

It could be done over a weekend, but I’d suggest giving it a week — so that you don’t go mad from making HSTs. The end result is approx. 40″ x 40″ without any borders.

Remember, don’t click on the ‘Finished Projects’ link until you want to know what the quilt looks like when it’s done.
